Previous Learning Experiences
Week 1
Reflect on:
your previous learning experiences. Think about one particularly successful and one unsuccessful learning experience. Consider what were the conditions that made this experience successful or unsuccessful for you and what this tells you about your own preferred ways to learn
My previous learning experience involved a number of classroom experiences with the teachers being the center of knowledge dispersal.
One unsuccessful learning experience would be the secondary school Additional Mathematics class where the teacher's assumption that we were all bright and had understood the topic were devastating to my ability to understand and master the topic. The teacher's lack of detailed explanation and very brief examples were not sufficient to firstly arouse my interest, yet alone understand and grasp the concept. Furthermore, her assumptions that we had the ability to master it easily were not fair and made those who were unable to understand afraid of expressing it as we did not want to look unintelligent in class.
One successful learning experience would be my A Level Sociology class where I was able to fully immerse myself in the subject with the support of the teacher. She would give real-life or local contextual examples to explain a theory or concept, making it more applicable to our realities.
